Beekeeping is most rewarding during honey flow season, however, as with all other rewarding events, comes some challenges; overheating is one of them. Long inspections, in which asphalt temps are often over 90°, coupled with heavy lifting, can quickly drain your energy and focus, making bee stings feel that much worse. Honey flow season requires heat management as it is critical to bee/mate in your focus.

Safta Bee not only sells bee suits, gloves, and other protective clothing but also services and has product lines to assist in beekeeping. From the field, we learned you need to stay cool just as much as you need to stay protected.

1. Recognize the causes of overheating
When honey flow is in progress, colonies are busier, and the duration of inspections is prolonged. The protective gear such as the bee suits, veils, and gloves, trap a lot of heat, particularly during humid conditions. Overheating can be managed by selecting appropriate beekeeping outfits as they offer sting protection and reduce heat.

2. Select Protective Gear That Breathes
There are beekeeping suits created for every season and function. Accessories made from lightweight fabrics, combinable vented layers, and structured materials that promote air flow and sweat evaporation, help keep beekeepers comfortable. High-end beekeeping outfits can be designed to withstand bee stings and offer superior beekeeping apiary session comfort.

3. Allocate Time Strategically
Try to perform your tasks during the cooler parts of the day. Working in the morning or in the late afternoon is preferable compared to mid day inspections. Working in the sun during the day increases the chances of heat exhaustion, irrespective of how advanced your beekeeping outfits are.

4. Alter Your Working Methods.
Attempt to be calm instead of hurrying. You can rest in the shade, take off your veil when you can safely move away from the bees, and don’t lift things that don’t need to be lifted. Even the most expensive beekeeping outfits work a lot better when paired with good work habits.

5. Stay Hydrated and Cool
Drink water before, during, and after your hive work. Long days are more manageable with electrolyte-enhanced beverages. Moisture-wicking base layers under your beekeeping outfits help keep sweat off your skin and help with cooling.

6. Rotate and Maintain Your Gear
During the honey season, it is each bee lover’s dream to need to wear an impenetrable suit. But if you have a suit covered in wax, propolis, and sweat, it is going to be extremely miserable and hard to breathe. In addition to keeping you more comfortable, properly-maintained and clean beekeeping outfits perform better in hot conditions and last longer.

Final Thoughts
Honey flow season beekeepers should not simply accept overheating as part of the process. With the appropriate equipment, better time management, and some strategies, you can remain cool, focused, and productive in the apiary.

At Safta Bee, we design protective clothing with real beekeepers in mind, because during the most demanding season of the year, comfort, safety, and performance should always be balanced.
